2014 PDC World Darts Championship: Semi-Final Preview

11

The PDC World Darts Championship is heading into the latter stages, and it has certainly been one dramatic tournament! The 64 that started the tournament out have been whittled down in spectacular fashion, and we've had some huge shocks along the way!

What a tournament we're experiencing at this years PDC World Darts Championship! It started early on with some big scalps, and the high quality of arrows has continued all the way through, and now just four men remain in the battle to be champion!

We've reviewed the action from the quarter-finals, and it's now time to take a serious look at the four men who remain in the battle to take the title from defending champion Phil "The Power" Taylor. They are all fully capable of winning the trophy, and will all have their say on Monday night as the semi-finals take place!

It pits two men who are more than used to being in the latter stages of tournaments against each other, as well as throwing a surprise name into the ring in the other half of the draw. In fact, lets start with that surprise name.

Peter Wright (Scotland) vs. Simon Whitlock (Australia)

Peter Wright is becoming a household name in the world of darts quicker than anyone could have imagined. He started this tournament ranked number 16 in the world, but will surely see a rapid rise in his ranking following this World Championship.

He has lit up the stage with his colourful hair and extravagant outfits, and he is fast becoming one of the real characters of the game. He has the crowd's backing whenever he takes to the stage, and will surely have a good chance against his opponent in the semi-final.

That opponent is the number 4 seed Simon Whitlock. The Australian has been producing some fantastic darts throughout the tournament, and he has become the big name in the top-half of the draw.

In a race to six sets (don't forget, you need three legs of 501 to secure a set), it promises to be a marathon night for both Wright and Whitlock. It is hard to envisage a situation where the match does not go close to the distance, and the team at About.com Darts and Bar Sports fancy the Australian to make a second world final, replicating the feat he achieved in 2010.

Prediction: Peter Wright 4-6 Simon Whitlock

Michael van Gerwen (Holland) vs. Adrian Lewis (England)

Whilst Wright has upset the odds in reaching the last four, the other semi-final sees two of the biggest names in the world of darts meeting each other.

It is a match that would be befitting of a world final, and it may well be one someday. However, in 2014 only one of Michael van Gerwen or Adrian Lewis can reach the final.

Quite who it will be is anyone's guess, as both "MVG" and "Jackpot" have the star potential to do so. In truth, it is hard to imagine the winner of the tournament not coming from this semi-final clash.

With Lewis desperately looking to add to the two World Championships he won in 2011 and 2012, he will be desperate to overcome one of his great rivals. Michael van Gerwen, on the other hand, is without a World Championship, and the tournament favourite could well end his drought in 2014! Our prediction though, is for our pre-tournament tip to get the victory.

Prediction: Michael van Gerwen 5-6 Adrian Lewis
