How to Organize Storage Cubes

20
    • 1). Stack cubes in the order you'll access them, from least used on the bottom to most used on the top. For example, if you have three cubes of the same size, each dedicated to paperwork, fill the bottom cube with papers you are saving solely for records, such as the IRS-suggested seven-year back taxes, then with papers you're keeping for a single year but don't plan to revisit, such as paid bills. Put papers you use every day, such as a check register or budget, in the topmost cube.

    • 2). Place cubes where they may be most easily accessed. For example, if you have to go up to your attic every day to get to your cookbook cube, you may find excuses to skip the task or start leaving cookbooks piled up. Rearrange furniture so cubes fit into convenient, easy-to-reach spaces.

    • 3). Dedicate cubes to one item or a family of specific items. Throwing anything in reach into a storage cube may clear off your desk, but it won't help you when you're looking at five closed storage cubes and have no idea what's in each one. Consider dedicating one cube to kitchen items, or make it further specified, such as special occasion kitchen items, glassware only, non-perishable foods or plastic containers.

    • 4). Pack some cubes away. It may seem like you want to keep all your cubes in reach or think their bright colors cheer up your home's decor, but they take up space. Pack non-essential cubes filled with items you use only once a year, such as holiday decorations or formal attire, into a shed, attic or storage unit. You'll know exactly where they are but gain back space.

    • 5). Label the front of every cube. Some storage cubes come with a square card holder where you can write "holiday decorations," "bills to pay" or "costume jewelry." Otherwise, use a thick black marker to write on a piece of white label paper a description of the contents of each cube.
