Pointer Dog Breed Information
- The pointer breed goes back to England in the 1600's. Pointers were used to locate and point hares in conjunction with greyhounds' coursing style of hunting. Pointers' lineage includes foxhounds, greyhounds and bloodhound, likely crossed with some type of "setting" spaniel that was often mixed with other breeds to produce bird dogs
- Pointers range from 23 to 28 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh from 45 to 75 pounds. It is one of the larger breeds, with a smooth, short coat liver, black, lemon and orange. The nose is black or brown in dark-colored dogs and lighter or flesh-colored in lighter-toned dogs. It has a muscular body and an intelligent expression. The tail tapers to a point. The pointer is a graceful dog with noble carriage and unmistakable, athletic good looks.
- Pointers are known for their even temperament and alertness. They are highly trainable and obey commands easily. Strong leadership is required to keep them from becoming willful. They make a congenial companion and fear neither man nor other dog. They are very gentle with children and make good family companion dogs. Though alert and quick to notice any intrusion on property, they are not excessive barkers. Pointers are a high-energy breed and vigorous exercise is important to their well-being, particularly when they are puppies as they can become destructive.
- Pointers have a short, smooth coat that needs little care beyond occasional brushing. Bathing should be done only when necessary. Their feet should be checked after outdoor activities. Pointers shed very little.
- Though generally a healthy breed, like many larger dogs, pointers are subject to hip dysplasia which may appear in middle age and show symptoms similar to arthritis. Skin problems like scaling and lumps can appear in pointers, as can thyroid problems. Some pointers have epilepsy that can be triggered by certain activities, and this can be treated with medication from your veterinarian.
