Temporary Fencing for Dogs
- Temporary fencing provides many benefits, including but not limited to the ability to keep your dog and your yard safe from intruders. Domesticated dogs that are allowed to roam free are a danger to themselves and others and are more likely to be stolen, hit by cars or attacked by other animals
If you aren't ready to lay down masonry for a permanent fence, temporary fencing provides all of the benefits, with the added benefit of easy removal. - Several types of temporary fencing for dogs are available. Wire fencing is the cheapest and commonly used for dog runs when owners wish to create a safe spot for their dog but don't want to fence off their entire yard. A picket fence is another option for containing small dogs and is the more aesthetic way to go. But if you choose this fence type, make sure you do not leave a gap at the bottom of your fence where your dog can wiggle through and escape.
- Invisible fencing is becoming more popular with dog owners who wish to retain all of the benefits of a fence without the actual fence itself. A collar is placed on the dog, and boundary stakes are placed at the chosen perimeter. When the dog crosses the perimeter, he receives a mild electric shock. Depending on the size and breed of your dog(s), this might be a good option.
- If you do not wish to fence in your entire yard, you will want to choose an optimal spot to create your fenced-in area, or "run." Choose a spot with at least some shade, and soft grass or a soft surface if possible. To decide how much space to give your dog, take into account its breed, age and level of activity, as well as the amount of space you have available. A young, active dog will probably be happy with more space than an older dog, but in general, the more space you can give your dog, the better.
Installing a wire fence or picket fence is relatively simple. Just make sure that with either type, you follow the directions carefully and take the time to secure your fence to the ground. If you are worried about your dog digging out and escaping, try putting an extra layer of wire mesh at the bottom of your fence. - Even if your budget is limited, there are inexpensive alternatives to the more expensive types of temporary fencing. For example, fencing off a small area of your yard with low cost wire and mesh fencing materials will save you a significant amount of money over fencing in your entire yard.
When choosing temporary fencing for your dog, keep in mind dogs are pack animals and enjoy feeling like they are part of the family. Do not leave your dog outside for prolonged periods of time--this can cause them to become lonely and isolated. A fence should only be used as a temporary solution for containing your dog.
