How to Make Clay Pot Projects for Kids

28
    • 1). Opt for clay that is easy to use and dry. Fimo or Sculpey clay can be dried in an oven, for example, or can be left out to dry in the open air. Plastiroc is also good for kids because it's extremely pliable yet it can maintain its shape.

    • 2). Teach children simple techniques for handling the clay. Pinching and coiling are both methods that children can learn easily.

    • 3). Give the children creative control in the process. Let them determine what the pot should look like. They might want a pot with a smooth and round look or one that is lumpy and more square. The project should emphasize expression and imagination.

    • 4). Decide whether the pots will be used for plants. If so, the inside of the pots should be sealed with two or three coats of an oil-based polyurethane. Clay pots that are solely decorative can be protected with a water-based polyurethane or craft acrylic sealant.

    • 5). Help the kids decorate their pots once they are dry. Provide watercolor paint, kid-safe markers or rubber stamps so the children can leave their artistic mark on their creations. Other items, such as buttons and feathers, may also dress up the pots.
