How to Do Nitration of 2-Phenylethanol Using Sodium Nitrite
- 1). Use your graduated cylinder to measure and pour 100 ml of 2-phenylethanol into your glass beaker.
- 2). Weigh 57.7 g of sodium nitrite on the digital scale. Carefully add the sodium nitrite to your 2-phenylethanol.
- 3). Catalyze the reaction by dropping 2 drops of hydrochloric acid from an eyedropper into the solution.
- 4). Stir with your stirring rod to fully mix the solution and allow the reaction to proceed.
- 5). Purify the p-nitro-2-phenylethanol product by placing it in your distillery and setting the temperature to 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not let the distillery exceed 219 degrees Fahrenheit, as this is the boiling point of 2-phenylethanol and you will no longer be purifying out the nitrified product.
