The Meaning of the Symbols on the State of Ohio Flag
- The blue triangle that creates most of the background on the Ohio state flag represents the hills and valleys that dot the state's landscape.
- The stripes on the the main, right portion of the Ohio state flag symbolize another part of Ohio's landscape. These stripes symbolize the state's many waterways and roads.
- The stars that surround the triangle on Ohio's state flag have two different meanings. The 13 stars around the left side of the circle represent each one of the original states part of the American Colonies. The four stars outside the circle on the right-hand side add to the total number of stars to symbolize Ohio as the 17th state admitted into the union.
- The white circle on the flag with the red center also bears two different meanings. The circle represents the Os in the state's name. It also represents what has been deemed as the state's nickname, the Buckeye state.
