How to Get Rid of Worms on Apple or Pear Trees Without Spraying Pesticides
- 1). Cultivate worm- and pest-resistant cultivars of pear and apple trees. Numerous cultivars available for purchase, many of which have been developed specifically for their high degree of resistance to worms and other damaging pests. Plant the most worm-resistant cultivars of pear and apple that are suitable for growing in your climate zone in place of cultivars more susceptible to pests.
- 2). Maintain good cultural management practices for your pear and apple trees. With few exceptions, worms and other pear and apple pests tend to attack trees that are already in a declining state of health. Keeping your apple and pear trees healthy and vigorous through watering, fertilization, mulching, liming and other cultural practices is one of the most effective ways of controlling worm pests without the use of chemical pesticides.
- 3). Remove the worms by hand. This approach is sometimes inefficient for apple and pear trees with substantial infestations but can be very effective at controlling minor infestations without the use of chemical pesticides. Simply remove the worms by hand while wearing gloves and crush or release them. Never eat apples or pears that show evidence of worm activity.
