Here are some practical tips on dealing with your parent's incontinence on a day-to-day basis: Have your parent wear clothing that does not get in the way and is easy to remove (Get rid of belts, pantyhose, and buttoned pants and a replace them with Velcro, stockings, and elastic waist bands).
Any time your parent leaves his or her dwelling, make sure they know where the nearest bathroom is at all times.
Try not to have your parent travel on public buses or other means of public transportation without immediate access to restrooms.
When dining in restaurants, going to the movies, flying in an airplane, etc.
, choose seats for them that are near a restroom.
Try to plan this in advance so that when you arrive this would not be an inconvenience.
Make sure your parent empties his or her bladder on a regular basis even if there is seemingly no need for it.
Do the following at your parents place of residence:
  • Clear a path to the toilet.
    Make sure there are no obstructions and your parent can easily get to it from anywhere in the residence.
  • The bathroom should be clearly marked with either a bright sign or a picture on its door.
    Use night lights and/or reflector tapes to mark the pathway at night.
  • If at all possible, designate a bathroom to be used exclusively by your parent.
    This way it will never be occupied by somebody else, when needed by your parent.
  • Make sure your parent is comfortable when using the toilet.
    You might need to install grab bars in the bathroom and a raised seat on the toilet.
  • Purchase a bed pan or a hand-held urinal to keep at the residence for emergencies and for traveling.
  • Two reduce unpleasant smell in the bathroom set up a small pail with a lid and a deodorizer for your parent to put soiled clothing into.
  • You can also get rid of bad odor by placing an open box of baking soda at an inconspicuous place in the restroom.
  • To protect furniture, place waterproof liners under bed sheets and chair covers.
