How to Compound an Ointment
- 1). Decide upon an ointment compound recipe.
- 2). Measure base media or medium on scale and place in stainless steel or enamel container.
- 3). Prepare remaining ingredients so they will be ready to add to the compound when the base ingredients reach the proper consistency.
- 4). Melt base media using a hot water bath. A stainless steel double boiler will work for this purpose. If you do not have a double boiler, your stainless steel or enamel container can be placed in a vessel of hot water.
- 5). Stir base media until it has completely dissolved, and remove from hot water bath.
- 6). Stir base media until it begins to thicken. Use spoon, or a rotary or electric mixer.
