How to Restore Woods With Mineral Oil
- 1). Move your wooden item to a well-ventilated indoor area over a tarp. Choose a location where no debris such as leaves can touch the wooden surface.
- 2). Examine the wood for damage. Sand down any scuffs, splinters and dimples in the wood with 120-grit sandpaper. Clean the wood with a piece of tack cloth (sticky cloth) until you remove all the remaining sawdust.
- 3). Soak a soft cloth with food-grade mineral oil (nontoxic mineral oil safe for all surfaces). Wipe the cloth over the wooden surface in tight circular motions until you coat the entire surface. Allow the mineral oil to sit for 24 hours before you continue.
- 4). Don a white cloth glove, and rub your finger on the wooden surface. Examine the glove for an oil stain, to determine if the wood surface needs to dry longer. Rub the surface with the oily cloth once again, if you discover oil on your finger.
- 5). Add another layer of mineral oil, if you deem it necessary.
