How to Build a Deer Hunting Stand
- 1). Find a clump of three trees growing together. Look for areas near a thicket, where deer tend to hide. The trees should have trunks at least two feet in diameter and growing no more than four feet apart at a point 12 feet above the ground.
- 2). Measure the distance between two adjacent tree trunks, and cut lengths of 2-by-4 studs to span this distance. Screw the boards into the trunks every 18 inches to make a ladder.
- 3). Measure the distances between the interior edges of the tree trunks at a point 12 feet above the ground. Cut lengths of 2-by-4 studs to span these distances. Cut a section of half-inch plywood to match the shape created by the three adjoining studs.
- 4). Screw the 2-by-4 platform frame into the interior edges of the tree trunks 12 feet above the ground. Screw the plywood platform onto the frame.
- 5). Measure the distances between the exterior edges of the tree trunks at a point three feet above the platform, and cut three lengths of 2-by-4 boards to span these distances. Install the boards on the exterior edges of the tree trunks to make a safety railing and gun rest.
- 6). Staple a tarp about 6 feet above the platform level, pulling it tight between the adjacent tree trunks so that water will not pool in the tarp. Install a stool in the deer stand, and drive a few long nails into the tree trunks to serve as hooks for clothing and equipment.
