What Makes For Good Photos?

31
Let's assume you are looking to capture a beautiful landscape, capturing the beauty of the land, of the way the sky seems to drop into the distant mountains and the beautiful colours of the sky, the land and the trees.
The location couldn't be better it seems.
However, prior to taking the shot, have you considered where the sun is and how it will affect the photo? Will the sun flare in your photo distracting from the scenery? Are you standing at the right height to get the photo and not have part of the photo partly occluded by a tall patch of grass? Basically, stop, think about the shot, take a test perhaps and see if changing spots - even by only a few metres - or taking it at a different time will have a positive effect on your photo.
Now, what about the lens you are looking to use.
Do you want to capture only the distant vista? Or do you want a wide angle shot of the landscape? Lens selection in this instance is of paramount importance and can change the photo completely.
Make sure you select the correct Camera Lens for your shot.
Once you have the location right, and the lens selected, it is a matter of making sure you have set your camera to the right settings.
The beauty of SLR Cameras, and therefore digital SLR cameras, is that they have a range of settings which allow you to adjust the way the image is captured.
Whilst this is of no surprise to those of you who own a DSLR, what a lot of people don't realise is that good photos often come from experimentation with different settings.
Different exposure times, different aperture settings, use of flash, use of camera filters and so forth will all change the output of the photo you are taking and can drastically change it.
At the end of the day, good photography is not a mistake.
Practice is what will improve your photography many times over.
Sure you can do your research and buy digital cameras online and ultimately decide to upgrade to a top of the line digital SLR camera body, but before you do, consider experimenting with what you have, taking the time to get the shot right and see if you just can't capture the photo you want, with the camera you have.
No matter what you decide: Happy Photo taking.
