"The money is in the list". You may have heard this quote numerous times, especially if you are promoting an online or work-from-home business opportunity. Guru after Guru will tell you to brand yourself and use squeeze pages partnered with an autoresponder to capture the details of wannabee internet marketers, MLM'ers, etc.

There is nothing incorrect with this advice, after all, if it worked for the "Gurus" why can it not work for you? Well it certainly can and should work for you, as long as you understand one important point and don't assume that the list is going to purchase from or join under you.

Let's face it, if it was that easy, wouldn't everyone just arrange a short-term bank loan and buy a ready-made list, then simply post regular offers to the list and become another internet millionaire? Look more closely at that scenario. You buy a ready-made list of many hundred contacts and eagerly send off your first offer, maybe inviting them to join your particular business venture or to purchase a product off Clickbank. You click Send and eagerly wait for the "You have made a sale", or "You have sponsored a new person", messages to pour into your inbox. Only it doesn't happen. You may get a few conversions but way short of what you were hoping for. The people on the list had never heard of you before so why would or should they purchase from you or join your business?

No. The missing key factor that you need to understand is that the money is LOCKED in the list and you need to unlock it. The money is in the RELATIONSHIP between you and the list and it is the relationship that will decide whether you unlock the value of that list. This is what the "Gurus" have perfected. Spend a few moments surfing a Traffic Exchange and you will see the same names appearing on squeeze pages over and over again (branding). Enter your details into any one of them and you will then start to receive emails from the "Guru" with little tidbits of valuable information. The Guru is forming a relationship with you, earning your trust, breaking down the barriers between you and their offer. That is what you need to understandto profit from your list.
