The opening of the Sheraton da Bahia Hotel next month is a milestone for the historical Hotel da Bahia, inaugurated in 1952. The building was also the Tropical Hotel da Bahia, which closed in 2010.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts, in a partnership with GJP Hotels & Resorts, is wrapping up a restoration process which will highlight the centrally located landmark's original features, such as its columns, tiles and murals by Genaro de Carvalho and Carybé.

The murals are listed by Bahia's Artistic and Cultural Institute (IPAC).

The new Sheraton da Bahia - the company's sixth enterprise in Brazil - will have 284 guest room,s including 16 suites, all with signature perks such as the Sheraton Sweet Sleeper Bed.

Two restaurants, Sheraton Fitness by Core Performance, the Link@Sheraton experience with Microsoft®, a spa with a beauty salon, a sauna and a pool, and a business and convention center with a capacity for 400 are some of the amenities and services.

The hotel's location in Cidade Baixa is ideal for Carnival in Salvador, as Campo Grande is one of the city's major Carnival circuits. It is also perfect for 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, as the Fonte Nova Stadium is less than 3 miles away.

A Historic and Artistic Landmark

Hotel da Bahia was the state's first five-star hotel. Its project by Paulo Antunes Ribeiro (who also designed the facade tiles) and Diógenes Rebouças is considered one of the top representatives of modern architecture in 1940s Salvador and of a vanguard moment encompassing local arts at large.

Avant-Garde na Bahia: Urbanismo, arquitetura e artes plásticas em Salvador nas décadas de 1940 a 1960 (by Nivaldo Vieira de Andrade Junior, Maria Rosa de Carvalho Andrade, and Raquel Neimann da Cunha Freire) points to the hotel as one of three major references in local architecture - the others are Centro Escolar Carneiro Ribeiro and Edifício Caramuru - which, moreover, showed remarkable integration with other arts.

Those constructions also incorporated elements such as pillars and brise-soleils characteristic of the escola carioca, an architectural trend with origins in the modern buildings of Rio de Janeiro.

The painted mural by Genaro de Carvalho (1926-1971), titled Festas Regionais, influenced by Cubism and depicting feasts of great importance to Salvador culture, such as festas de largo - celebrations with a syncretic Catholic and Candomblé meaning - trailblazed regionalism in Bahian mural art. Preserved in its majestic beauty at the new Sheraton da Bahia, the mural also marks a phase in Genaro de Carvalho's career before he became one of the greatest exponents of Brazilian tapestry.

Carybé (1011-1997), born Hector Julio Paride Bernabó in Argentina, made the panels depicting scenes of Brazilian people and history which decorate the hotel lobby. Like the Genaro de Carvalho panels, they were restored by experts of local Studio Argolo.

Upcoming Luxury Hotel Openings in Salvador

The opening of Sheraton da Bahia precedes that of other hotels which will boost the upscale market in Salvador - the Fasano, to be operated by the brand's major shareholders JHSF in the building at Praça Castro Alves formerly occupied by the A Tarde newspaper, and the Hilton, across from Mercado Modelo in the Comércio district, are also planned.

The seventh Sheraton and ninth Starwood to open in Brazil will be the Sheraton Reserva do Paiva Hotel and Convention Center, in Recife. Opening is planned for the first quarter of 2014.
