How to Make Baskets for Kids
- 1). Lay out the clothesline on the working surface—this will provide the structure for your basket. Starting at one end of the clothesline, begin wrapping the clothesline in the first cotton strip. Wrap the clothesline tightly, so that each wrap of cotton fabric overlaps the previous turn. Wrap two inches of clothesline.
- 2). Bend the two inches of wrapped clothesline into a tight spiral, flat on the table.
- 3). Insert two inches of the unwrapped end of cotton strip into the eye of the tapestry needle. Do not knot the fabric.
- 4). Bind the spiraled coils of wrapped clothesline together with the needle. Insert the needle through the center of the coil, and pull the fabric tight.
- 5). Continue wrapping and coiling the clothesline in the same fashion. Bind the new coil to the inner coil every inch by passing the needle around the inner coil and pulling the fabric tight.
- 6). Add new fabric strips as needed. When adding a new strip, overlap the previous strip by 1/2 inch to 1 inch.
- 7). Build up the sides of the basket when the base has reached 2 1/2 inches in diameter. The vertical sides are completed in the same fashion, but the new coils are placed on top of the previous coils instead of alongside them.
- 8). Finish the basket by wrapping the end of the clothesline in fabric and securely attaching it to the previous coil with the tapestry needle. Tuck in the remaining fabric end.
