How to Replace Drum Pads
- 1). Remove the nuts on the rim of the drumhead with the drum key. Clean the threading of the removed nuts by twisting them into the rag while it is in your other hand. Repeat until all grease and dirt is removed.
- 2). Remove the rim and the drumhead. They should both lift off without resistance. If they won't budge, locate other objects that might be securing them, such as the snares on the underside of a snare drum.
- 3). Place the new drumhead on the frame and center it. Place the rim on top of it. Reposition and attach any objects, such as snares, that were removed in order to remove the old head and rim.
- 4). Apply a pea-sized amount of petroleum jelly to the tips of each nut and insert them through their holes in the rim. Hand-tighten the nuts evenly.
- 5). Tighten a nut with the drum key by a half turn and do the same to the nut directly across from it. Repeat this step for all nuts, until the desired pitch is reached. Tightness determines the drumhead's pitch.
