Do It Yourself Stucco With Joint Compound
- 1). Pour the joint compound mix and water into a 5-gallon bucket in the amounts indicated on the product packaging based on the square-foot coverage desired.
- 2). Attach a mixer paddle to a drill by inserting the standard bit end into the drill and tightening it.
- 3). Plug the drill into an electrical outlet and force the mixer paddle down into the compound. Thoroughly mix the joint compound to the consistency of thick pancake batter.
- 4). Spread the compound over the wall surface with a trowel. Place a thin layer, approximately 1/8-inch thick, on the wall and use equal pressure on the trowel. Apply it quickly, but as evenly as possible until the entire wall is covered. Allow the surface to dry for approximately four hours.
- 5). Apply a second coat over the first that is also about 1/8-inch thick. Place it on quickly using large swipes with the trowel. Move the trowel in a variety of directions to get the desired stucco effect.
- 6). Drag a putty knife through the compound in a manner similar to frosting a cake to create further texture.
- 7). Leave the stucco surface to dry overnight. Paint the new wall only when you are sure it is completely dry.
