When Intervention Makes Sense

20
You've been watching your friend or loved one go downhill for years.
You've talked to them several times and they seemed to deny it every time you talk to them.
You worry about them doing real damage to themselves or others, destroying themselves both physically and financially and you've reached the point where something must be done.
This is when intervention makes sense.
Intervention is where the addicts friends and loved ones meet with the addict in a private setting and address the problem.
The goal of the intervention is to make the addict agree in accept that they have a problem and give them options to correct it.
An ultimatum is normally a big part of the intervention as it forces the addict to choose between his friends and family or his addiction.
There are a lot of problems that can go wrong with an intervention.
The addict may still be in denial and may be quite hostile to being confronted by his friends and family over a problem he doesn't believe he has.
An addict, while being confronted, may lash out and use his personal knowledge of his friends and coworkers.
The addict will take steps to change the subject and to end the conversation as quickly as possible.
"How dare you accuse me of having a drinking problem, you were out drinking at the bar just last Saturday'" Many times the best solution is to bring in someone who is fully trained in doing interventions.
A certified interventionist will have dealt with countless addicts and will be prepared to deal with all of the denial and psychological games that an addict will attempt.
No matter how well intentioned, a certified interventionists will have a much higher success rate dealing with addicts than an untrained family member or friend.
Once the intervention is complete and the addict has decided that they need treatment they need to be immediately transported to a treatment center that has been chosen for them.
This is also something that a certified interventionists can help you with.
Waiting more than even a couple of days before giving the attic into treatment will give them an opportunity to change their mind.
You want to have the treatment center picked out an appointment made before you do the intervention.
