Complement the Face

• The first rule of purchasing clothing is that it must complement the body as a whole. Facial shape won't affect most clothing choices, but it's something to keep in mind when purchasing earrings, necklaces, glasses and hats. The prime target in the whole exercise is striking a balance of shapes that is pleasing to the eye.
  
  Human beings are attracted to symmetry. We're more attracted to a softer, youthful line in women, and a harsher, strong one in men. Therefore, people can use their accessories to play up or tone down the planes and angles of the face.

Square Faces

• A striking face with lots of angles calls for a bit of roundness for balance. Rounded beads, circular shapes and spheres will do much to soften things up.
  
  If the face is an oblong rectangle, avoid long earrings that can draw the eye downward. The goal is to add width. Chokers, short earrings and studs are worth a shot.
  
  Short, wide rectangular faces should, on the other hand, wear some dangling pieces to add more length. Try some long oval hoops, feather earrings and V-shaped necklaces.
  
  

Angular and Heart-Shaped Faces

  Angular ladies might want to try things that bring focus up from the chin, which is the point of the facial triangle. Go for intense eyes, fun frames of your glasses and triangular shapes. Choker necklaces that lie in a straight line across the throat also even out the chin point.
  
  The heart shape needs to narrow the forehead and bring out the jaw. Wide, dangling earrings and snug necklaces are great for this.
  
  

Round Faces

• Round faces have lots of circles in the face at the chin and cheek area. Geometric jewelry is a good bet. Rounded, symmetrical earrings are also nice, provided that they aren't too small. Necklaces with pendants add length.
  
  Oval faces can carry medium-length earrings, but nothing too long. Triangular shapes also work. Practically any necklace works with the oval face.
  
  

Clothing Patterns

• When choosing clothing with a particular print, think of what the primary shape of the design will accentuate. For instance, someone with a longer face may not want vertical stripes. Rounder shapes and big polka dots may serve to bring notice to an already curvy face. Use angles to balance roundness and circles to balance rectangles.
