15

    Removal and Preparation

    • 1). Remove the cabinet from the wall. Use a drill and bit to remove all screws. Remove all hinges and hardware and set the cabinet door aside.

    • 2). Sand down the cabinet surface with 120-grit sandpaper. Remove all polyurethane covering from the cabinet surface. Sand down damaged area until the surface is flat and consistent with the exterior surface of the cabinet.

    • 3). Apply wood bleach over the wood. Apply a thicker layer over the damaged area and remaining stain. Allow wood bleach to absorb into the wood for 24 hours.

    • 4). Wipe cabinet surface with a dry rag to remove dust particles from the surface. Sand the entire cabinet surface with 220-grit sandpaper to create a smooth surface. Spend extra time sanding down the damaged area. There will be no visible signs of any previous damage to the cabinet.

    • 5). Wipe the surface with a dry rag to remove all dust particles. Apply a thick layer of wood conditioner with a rag to the wood surface. Allow the wood conditioner to set for 10 to 15 minutes. The wood conditioner should be dry to touch before continuing.

    Finishing

    • 1). Apply wood stain into the wood with stain cloths. Put on rubber gloves, and massage stain into the wood in a circular motion. Allow stain to set for five to 15 minutes, depending on the depth desired.

    • 2). Wipe away the excess wood stain from the surface. The remaining stain should be thin enough to allow the wood grain to show through. Allow wood to dry for four to six hours. Apply a second coating if needed. The decision to apply a second coating should be based on the color of the existing cabinet finish. If you wish to apply additional stain, repeat steps one and two in section two before continuing.

    • 3). Stir polyurethane prior to application. Dip the foam paint brush into the polyurethane. Remove excess liquid from the foam brush with the rim of the paint can.

    • 4). Apply a thin layer of polyurethane over the cabinet surface. Work the brush in the direction of the grain to avoid puddling. Allow the polyurethane to set for six hours before applying a second coating. Allow the finished cabinet to dry for 24 hours before hanging.

    • 5). Re-attach the door, hinges, handles and all other hardware to the cabinet. Re-attach the cabinet to the wall using the drill.
