    Ohio Fire Chief's Association

    • Backed by the Ohio Fire Chief's Association, the Ohio Fire and Emergency Services Foundation sponsors six scholarships and loans to fire and medical service personnel to attend training programs and schools. Several of the scholarships can be used toward education programs sponsored by the Ohio Fire Executive Program. The Dominion Foundation OFE Scholarship and the VFIS Scholarship both offer $1,600 per semester to students. Participants in the Ohio Fire Chief's Association Fire Officer I and II programs can apply for $800 scholarships open to those with financial need. All the scholarships are open to Ohio residents.

    Barbara A. Barkley Scholarship Fund

    • Open to students in the fire science program at the University of Cincinnati, the Barbara A. Barkley Scholarship Fund honors Barbara Barkley, a former program coordinator for the program who succumbed to cancer in 2004. Any student enrolled in the fire science program may apply for the $1,000 scholarship. Scholarship winners are chosen by the fire science program chair and based on financial need, academic merit and achievement. Applicants are also judged on essays describing how the money would benefit their careers.

Assistant Chief Paul McKendry Memorial Scholarship

    • Funded and administered by the Fairfield Community Foundation, the Assistant Chief Paul McKendry Memorial Scholarship honors Paul McKendry, a former assistant chief of the Fairfield Township Fire Department. Scholarship amounts vary depending on funding received each year and go to a student enrolled in a paramedic or firefighter program or pursuing a degree in fire science or fire administration. Applicants must be residents of Fairfield Township or the city of Fairfield. As part of the application process, applicants must answer 10 questions regarding their career goals and accomplishments.

    Mayor's Emergency Medical Services Scholarship

    • Sponsored by the Mayor's Department of Akron, the Mayor's Emergency Medical Services Scholarships encourage high school seniors in Akron public schools to pursue careers in fire services or emergency medical services. The scholarship pays for the student to undergo a three-step process needed to earn an Ohio paramedic certification. Requirements include a 2.0 grade point average and a 90-percent-or-better attendance record. Students must also be able to start EMS basic training, the first step in the process, in the fall following graduation from high school. Scholarship applications must be accompanied by an essay and two letters of reference.
