Tea and Iron Absorbtion

10
Does drinking tea affect your body's ability to absorb iron? Moderate tea consumption (3-4 cups daily) is generally not associated with health risks for most people, assuming you are healthy to start with.
There have been however, concerns expressed regarding tea consumption and it's association with poor iron absorption, which in extreme cases can lead to anemia.
The good news is, evidence has confirmed that tea drinkers who are not at risk for poor iron absorption and have normal iron status, shouldn't have to alter their tea drinking routine.
Studies indicate that most moderate tea drinking (3-4) cups daily has very little impact on the ability to absorb iron.
Who's at risk for iron deficiency? According to "The National Diet and Nutrition Survey " (Henderson L, Irving K, Gregory J, 2003) the groups at higher risk are: children under 6, adolescent girls, women aged 18- 49 and women 75 and older.
Also, evidence indicates that certain types of iron are relatively unaffected by tea consumption such as iron contained in red meats and animal products; consuming these foods while drinking tea has no effect on iron absorption.
On the other hand, iron derived from cereals, vegetables and dried fruit is less well absorbed by the body especially if tea is consumed while eating these foods.
It is suggested that if you feel at risk for poor iron absorption, simply delay drinking tea until after your meal.
There is strong evidence that 3-4 cups of tea consumed between meals has no adverse effect on the body's ability to absorb iron.
Remember, most people with good health have nothing to worry about regarding consuming tea, and can truly enjoy the taste and health benefits without worry, however if you aren't sure about your iron status check with your physician.
