How to Make a Tie-Dyed Towel
How to Make a Tie-Dyed Towel
Once you discover how easy it it to personal a beach towel, you won't want to stop after one. Follow these directions and you will want to start tie-dying every towel in your house.
Let's begin...
Gathering The Supplies
Before you start any craft project, it is easiest to gather together all of the supplies. For this tie-dye project you will need:
Making the Letters for Your Towel
Start out by writing the letters you will be using onto the white side of the contact paper. I wrote "I (heart) SUMMER" using letter about 2 1/2-inches tall. You can write what I wrote, a person's name, or anything else you want.
If you need help with your letters you can do what I did and use a word processing program to make the letters. I then printed them out and traced them onto the contact paper.
You can also used letters like the ones features on these alphabet coloring book pages as a pattern.
Cutting Out the Letters
Use the scissors to carefully cut out each letter from the Con-tact paper.
Preparing Your Work Surface
This could end up being a very messy craft. Cover your work surface with newspaper to protect it. Lay your towel flat on the newspaper.
Sticking Your Letters on Your Towel
Now, carefully peel the paper backing off each Con-Tact paper letter and stick it in place on the towel. Once you have it where you want it, press it down firmly so no paint sneaks under the edges.
Start Tie-Dyeing The Towel
After you read the directions for the Simply Spray fabric paint, you can start decorating the towel. To avoid paint drips on your project follow the tips from the Simply Spray people who suggest you start spraying on a paper towel and then move it to your project. End the same way. Following this simple tip, I found this dye very easy to use.
Paint as many or few colors as you want on your towel. It is normal for the fabric paint to pool on top of letters as the Con-Tact paper is not absorbent. You will take care of that in the next step.
Once you are done applying the paint to your towel, set it aside and let it dry. Once it is dry enough to touch, dab off any wet paint on the Con-Tact paper using a paper towel, and then pull off the letters to show your finished product.
Follow the washing and drying instructions that came with your Simply Spray.
