Blue Mastiff

These beautiful dogs require an experienced dog owner who has the confidence to deal with the size and strength of these intelligent creatures.
Do not buy a Mastiff puppy thinking it will cure you of your fear of larger dogs.
The animal will sense your fear but won't understand that they are the cause.
They will think you are in danger and will act aggressively to protect you from a potential threat.
This breed is well known for loyalty to its owners and for protecting them against all odds.
The Mastiff has a history of being reared as a guard dog so these protective instincts are in its genes.
It cannot be trained out of them but proper training can guide the dog on how best to behave.
Don't buy this particular breed if you are looking forward to long runs in the country with your pet.
Although they require quite a bit of exercise as puppies and young adult, once they become adult dogs they only require moderate activity.
This breed is prone to hip problems and over exertion can increase the risk of injury.
They require a daily walk but if your dream was cross country running you might want to look for a different breed.
Other health problems common with the blue mastiff is a condition called cherry eye where the tear duct becomes very red and inflamed.
Unfortunately there is no cure apart from removal of the duct which will mean your animal has to have eye drops administered on a daily basis.
You cannot always prevent your dog falling ill but you can a lot to lessen the chances of it happening.
Only buy the puppy from a reputable breeder and not from a pet store or puppy farm where disease can run rife.
A responsible breeder will not use ill animals in their breeding schemes nor will they cause the animals to have too many litters.
A dull greasy coat, swollen abdomen, dirty smelly ears are only some of the signs which will tell you the puppy is unhealthy.
If you are unsure, take a friend or relative with a good knowledge of animals when you go to choose your pet.
Although it must be said that if you are a novice dog owner, this particular breed might not be the right one for you.
All Mastiffs could suffer from a problem with sociability.
They were not reared to be friendly to anyone other than their owners and this applies just as much to other animals as it does to humans.
You should take your puppy out regularly to places where they can interact with other animals and people to teach them to become more sociable.
There are Mastiff dog training classes which can help them to learn how to socialize with other dogs.
It may also prove helpful for you to meet other owners who have decided that the Blue Mastiff is the dog for them.
