How to Enroll for Medicare Benefits

    • 1). Do not apply for Medicare if you are already getting health benefits from Social Security for of one or more of the specifically mentioned illnesses. This applies to those who are covered by the Railroad Retirement Board. In these instances, you will automatically be enrolled and a Medicare card will be sent out to you a few months prior to your sixty-fifth birthday. There is nothing for you to do but wait for the mail.

    • 2). Enroll in Medicare prior to turning 65 regardless of whether you intend to retire or continue working. Receiving Medicare benefits is determined by your age and not whether you are employed.

      Social Security Card

      Call the Social Security Office at 1-800-772-1213 three months prior to turning 65. If you prefer, contact them via the Internet.

    • 4). Make sure that you give them your name, Social Security number, address and any other information for which they might ask. Make an appointment, and do not forget to bring your Social Security card with you. They will let you know what other documents are necessary, if any.

    • 5). Coverage for Medicare hospital insurance, also known as part A, and medical insurance, also known as part B, starts on the first of the month of your birthday. You have an option of not accepting part B medical insurance, since you have to pay for it out of your own pocket. Expect to get a Medicare card in the mail a few months prior to your turning 65.
