College Athletes Eat on the Run

The student athlete is bombarded with time reducing situations.
With class and practice taking up the better part of the day, it is hard for athletes to get in a nutritious meal.
Athletes, when stuck for time, will snack on processed foods for a quick "hold-me-over-meal.
" This can be very detrimental to all aspects the student's life including their studies, training and emotion well-being.
To succeed as a student-athlete at the collegiate level, studletes (student-athlete) must pay close attention to what they eat just like they would their homework.
If they get behind in their class work their grades will slip; if they get behind in their nutritional needs then their performance slips.
Nutrition is the key to success.
Remember when your high school teachers told you to eat a good breakfast the morning of the SAT's? There is a reason behind that.
Nutrients such as essential vitamins and minerals give life to vital organs such as your brain and muscles.
If your brain does not function properly, it will be a ripple affect into the classroom, practice field and social life.
Here are a few tips to help you as a athlete get the proper nutrition:
  • Wake up early to eat breakfast.
    Never sleep in, always eat breakfast.
    This is a must for athletes!
  • Bring Tupperware to the cafeteria and stuff away a few sandwiches.
  • Put some fruit in your bag, just incase you can not make it to the dinning hall.
  • Consider a protein shake for a quick "hold-me-over-meal.

If you follow these simple steps, needed nutrients will keep your energy levels high and help you recover from a strenuous practice.
There is no excuse for missing a meal.
If it comes to the point where your schedules is overwhelming, then pack a cooler with food that you will need during the day.
