Appalachian Backcountry Fishing
- Fish for catfish, bass and trout at the southern end of the Appalachian trail, on Lake Winfield Scott in the Chattahoochee National Forest. Some varieties of crayfish are on the endangered species list. Do not use these as bait.
- Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee includes Watauga Reservoir, a man-made reservoir about 60 years old. The reservoir provides access to the Appalachian trail.
- The National Forests of North Carolina include four forests: Nantahala, Uwharrie, Pisgah, and Croatan. Croatan National Forest on the coast provides both freshwater and saltwater fishing.
- In the north Appalachians, the White Mountains of New Hampshire include fly-fishing opportunities in Saco Lake. Ice fishing is another backcountry activity, along the Northern trail during winter.
- This Vermont lake has many private areas that extend into Quebec, Canada. Access from the United States is through Newport, Vt. The area locally named "the Northeast Kingdom" has many opportunities for back-country fishing and exploring.
