How to Apply Chemicals to a Pool

    • 1). Calculate the required amount of chemical to apply to your pool. Read the label on your pool chemical and determine how much to use in the treatment per 10,000 gallons of pool water. A pool's gallonage will vary depending on shape, size and depth.

    • 2). Determine how to apply your chemical product. Each type of chemical product is applied in a different fashion. Liquid chemical products such as algaecide and floc are applied directly to pool water. Powders and shocks are mixed in a 5-gallon bucket with water before applying to avoid bleaching or staining the pool bottom.

    • 3). Apply the chemicals to your pool. Do not pour chemicals directly into your skimmer unless instructed otherwise. Walk around the edge of your pool and pour the chemical directly into the water as you go. Make sure that the product is spread over as much area as possible. Chemicals applied this way circulate throughout the pool faster and are more effective.

    • 4). Keep your pool running until the chemical is completely dissolved. Run your pool until no trace of the chemical can be seen in the water. Do not shut the pool off while there is chemical still visible in the pool water.
