Art Projects for Toddlers With Craft Sticks

13

    Butterfly Wand

    • Toddlers can create these colorful butterfly wands and pretend to be princesses or fairies. A green pipe cleaner should be partially glued to the craft stick by an adult while toddlers decorate an opened cone-shaped coffee filter with markers or crayons. Once the filter is decorated, scrunch up the middle of the filter, glue it onto the craft stick and glue the pipe cleaner over the filter. Have your toddler curl the ends of the pipe cleaner around her finger to create antennae. Once everything is dry, let your child's imagination run wild as she makes up stories and plays with her new wand.

    Paint-Stick Trees

    • You can also create Christmas trees with your craft sticks. Glue the ends of three craft sticks together to form a triangle and another into the center of the base of the triangle for the trunk of the tree. Have your toddler decorate the craft sticks with different colored markers or crayons. You can also provide different-colored pom-poms and craft glue so your toddler can decorate the tree with ornaments. Yarn or ribbons could also be used as garland. This art project is only limited by your toddler's imagination.

    Photo Frame

    • Your toddler can also create a colorful frame for her favorite picture of you and her together. Have your child decorate craft sticks in multiples of four using crayons, markers or washable paint. Make sure to put down a drop cloth to protect your furniture beforehand. Once she is finished decorating the sticks, glue them together to form a square frame. Add as many layers of sticks as you want. Once the glue has dried, place your picture on the back of the frame and use card stock to hold it in place. You are then ready to display the picture of you and your child with pride.

    Cat or Dog Magnet

    • Miniature craft sticks can also be used to create colorful magnet figurines of your cat or dog. Have your toddler draw your pet's legs onto four craft sticks. Add tiny dash marks on the bottom of the sticks to look like toes. Have him also draw the back of your pet onto another craft stick. Glue the four legs onto the underside of the back piece. The tail can be created by twisting two pipe cleaners together and gluing them to the backside of the animal. Your toddler should then draw your pet's face and ears onto construction paper so it can be glued onto the main craft stick. Add an adhesive-backed magnet to the back, and you have your own, personalized refrigerator magnet.
