Crescente Gastronomia, a restaurant in the center of Nova Friburgo, embodies the blend of pastoral roots and sophisticated culinary which is becoming one of the town's hallmarks.

Warmly overseen by the owners - Carla Carvalho and Victor Rodrigues, a couple - Crescente draws its strength from the harmony between French recipes and products from local farms, part of Rio de Janeiro's green belt.


The couple's son, enologist and culinary teacher Ruan Rodrigues, is in charge of the wine cellar, with over 200 labels from 14 countries.

The restaurant occupies a house from the 1940s. A small shop sells gourmet food.

Food at Crescente:

Chef Carla Carvalho rotates the menu about twice a year. Among her specialties are harmonious mixes of homegrown herbs, which appear in recipes such as the snook in fine herbs and mushrooms, served with apple rice and Camembert.

Arracacia and kale, staples of Brazilian country cooking, dress the lamb in wild mushrooms and fine herbs. Partridge, trout, rabbit and duck are other meats available - vegetarians may need to personalize their order, but there are definitely plenty of vegetables in stock.

Crème brûlée, ginger-scented passion fruit cream and apricot parfait are a few of the dessert options.
