Dandruff in Dogs

10
Dogs can be a delight to have as a pet.
But, the sight of white flaky substances called 'dandruff' in their coat can be disturbing.
Dandruff in dogs is quite similar to the dandruff experienced by humans which is formed continuously when the dead skin cells are slowly but continuously replaced by new skin.
These are prominent around the neck, rump and the back of the dog.
Some of the reasons for accumulation of dandruff are: • Poor hygienic conditions.
• Low humidity in the surrounding atmosphere.
• Deficiency of components of natural oils, body fluids, fat and nutrients.
• Improper bathing.
• Improper massaging and brushing.
• Inadequacy of physical activities.
Some of the ways to prevent dandruff are: • Bathe the dog once a month in summers and twice in a month in winters with an anti-dandruff shampoo.
The water for bath should be lukewarm.
Massage the skin and the coat thoroughly to remove the flakes.
• Avoid human shampoos.
Use only dog shampoos since these contain salicylic acid or sulfur which acts well on the dandruff.
Apply the shampoo and leave it on for five minutes for it to work.
Avoid anti-flea shampoos since they dry the skin further.
• Oat-meal soap for humans can be used since it contains effective moisturizers.
• Oil rinse can be sprayed especially for dry skin since this lubricates the skin and keeps the moisture in.
This is most effective in humid, dry, or polluted places.
• Supplement food with nutrients essential for their good health.
• Groom the coat with soft brush to remove the dead cells and keep the skin clean.
