Can Children Break Hot Tub Equipment?

40
When someone buys a hot tub for their family, they are probably doing it for their children. They will be doing it for themselves as well, but they have to know that the children are going to get the most use out of it. They are going to love to jump into the warm water all year-round, whether it is a warm summer night or a crisp winter afternoon. The problem with this is that children can break hot tub equipment, and anyone who owns a tub should assume that this will happen at some point.

There are main pieces of equipment that are much too durable to be damaged. For example, the heater itself will probably not be broken because of anything that a child does. Unless someone strikes it with intent to break it, the metal sides are going to hold up to abuse. In the same way, accidental abuse will probably not be enough to crack the tiles in the bottom of the hot tub or any of the other parts of the ceramic or acrylic body.

The parts that are in danger are those that are more fragile. For instance, there are handles that must be turned in order to allow warm water to flow to the spa. Some models use round handles that can be spun in a circle, while other models use levers that just have to be turned 90 degree one direction or the other. Either way, these could be broken off at the point where they attach to the pipes. If a child is so excited to use the hot tub that he puts too much pressure on the handle, it may break.

Children also like to take things into the water with them. If they are young, they may want to bring cars, trucks, boats, and other small toys of that nature. If these things are sucked into a drain or jammed intentionally into a jet, the spa could break. Many times, extracting the toy will be enough to fix things. In some cases, though, the jet or the drain will have to be replaced.

The last thing that a hot tub owner needs to keep an eye on is the electrical wiring that connects all of the hot tub equipment to the electrical lines. Water that gets on these wires could cause them to corrode, and that could cause them to break. Children will not often think of this, however, and they may run over by the equipment while they are still wet. This can cause damage over time.
