Yorkie Obedience Training Basics

10
You are the proud new parent of a lively and fun little Yorkshire terrier, but then you ask yourself what's next? Well, now you have to focus learning about training a yorkie.
Training can sound like a daunting task to a new dog owner, but on the flip side of the coin think of how difficult dealing with an older untrained dog is.
Training a yorkie takes patience and perseverance.
There are several methods available when training, many of which can be interchanged to find the best overall method for you.
Some individuals use training equipment such as clickers, treats, and a crate.
Be sure to offer plenty of toys to your yorkie puppy as well.
Puppies enjoy chewing, and by giving them the option of positive items to chew on they may not chew on negative items, such as you or household items.
Another option is to utilize a professional.
Many professionals offer classes to assist in training along with training materials such as books and videos.
Yorkshire terriers are sweet dogs, but remember that even the sweetest dog can try your patience when training has set backs.
Housebreaking otherwise known as potty training is an important portion of training.
Every dog will learn at their own pace, and trying to rush this is not productive during training.
One positive part of housebreaking that you can decide on is whether or not to litter train your yorkie.
Since they are a very small dog breed, many owners have opted for allowing them to use a litter box similar to cats or the artificial patch of grass that is now available at many retailers.
This option works well if you know that outside potty breaks may be scarce due to work, or if you live in an area that has cold weather.
Once training has started you will learn what methods work best for you and your dog.
Don't get discouraged that a certain method has not worked yet.
Give it time, and if it still seems to not be working try another route.
Don't be afraid to ask for help if needed.
Training a yorkie will have it's ups and downs, but in the end following through will result in a rewarding future with a well behaved pet.
