If possible, visit the property and do a "walk-through" with apartment management several days before you move into your unit. The apartment management will have a checklist of the items to prepare the apartments for new residents. They will also have a checklist of items when residents leave the unit. Ask to see a copy of both. Ask if the make-ready has been completed, or if any items are pending.

Visit the unit with the apartment representative and look at all the finishing touches. Are the carpets clean?
Are there any stains?
Is the tile clean and in good condition?
Is the tile chipped?
Is the paint fresh?
Are the walls clean?
Are the lighting fixtures in good condition?
Do the lighting fixtures work?
Are the plumbing fixtures in good condition and do they work?
Are all appliances in the unit?
Are they working?
Is the countertop in good condition?
Is the sink in good condition or is it chipped?
How about the shower or bath tub?
Is the exterior door to the apartment in good condition?
Are the interior doors in good condition?
Is the hardware on the doors in good condition?
Does the apartment have a deadbolt on the exterior door?
Does the apartment have a fire alarm?
Does the fire alarm function properly?
Are their window coverings for each of the Windows?
Are they in good condition?
Do the windows open in, close and lock properly?

If you review these items several days before you moved, any last-minute problems can be fixed before you move into the unit.
