Commercial and recreational fishermen use various types of gear to find, hook (or trap) and pull in fish, including sonar devices, rods, reels, tackle (like hooks and lures), nets and winches for pulling in nets and letting them out. Those interested in a career involving fishing gear can seek employment on or off the water. - A boatswain, also known as a deckboss, works aboard a commercial fishing vessel. The position is above deckhand and below captain, first mate and---where present---second mate. While the higher positions focus on navigation, steering, locating fish and managing the crew, the boatswain is responsible for managing all of the equipment. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, a boatswain sets up, operates and repairs the fishing gear; oversees the use of nets, traps and hooks; and supervises deckhands during fishing operations.
- Most boatswains start out as deckhands. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, on land, deckhands are responsible for loading all of the necessary gear and supplies before a boat leaves port. Once on the water, they work alongside the boatswain in deploying gear and hauling in the catch. Deckhands often utilize gaffs (hooked poles) and/or nets for pulling fish in over the sides of a vessel.
- Fishing guides are often self-employed. Guides know where to find fish and how to catch them and share their expertise in the proper use and repair of gear. Guides supply customers with equipment, such as rods, reels, tackle and nets, and provide tips on casting, reeling and other fishing-related techniques. They also set up or rig gear (such as switching out one lure for another) and provide assistance in hauling in fish.
- Many retail stores, from large sporting good outlets to small fishing shacks, sell fishing gear. According to Trails.com, working in a retail position is a great way to learn about the various types of fishing equipment and the different brands available. Responsibilities include taking inventory, stocking shelves and providing customers with information on products.
