Architecture
When view from the north, all the three temples in the Shore Temple complex resemble Dharmaraja Ratha, which is one of the group monuments of Mahabalipuram. The main temple of this temple faces and is a five-storeyed structure. Sculpted from granites stones, this temple is one of the earliest and prominent structural temples of South India. This temple structure has a pyramid form and has a height of about 18 m. It stands on a square platform, which is 15 m high. In front of the main temple, there sits another small temple, which was the original porch of the temple complex. It is made from finely cut granite stones.
The main temple and the one in front of it are devoted to Lord Shiva while the third temple is devoted to Lord Vishnu and has a reclining statue of Him. The entrance to this temple complex is made through a transverse barrel vault gopuram. The shikharas (top) of the two temples dedicated to Lord Shiva have an octagonal shape. The interiors of these temples are beautifully carved and make for an astonishing sight. The compound wall surrounding the temple complex display large sculptures of Nandi, the mount of Lord Shiva.
In the compound wall, there is a monolithic sculpture of a roaring lion with the depiction of goddess Durga in the background. The lion is considered to be the mount of the goddess. Also, there is a depiction of a female guardian with a bow in her hand, on the leg of the lion.So this Shore Temple complex is an amazing historic site of the country and a visit to this place can be an enriching experience.
