Axillary Hyperhidrosis - What is Axillary Hyperhidrosis?

7
The human body is equipped to heat itself in winter and cool itself in summer.
The cooling effect is done through sweating and perspiration.
We sweat when we work out and the body gets warm and heated, we sweat when we are out in the hot sun or when the weather is humid and warm.
The sweat glands do their work and the body remains in a normal condition of warmth and moisture.
The normal body temperature of 98.
6 degrees Fahrenheit or 36.
9 degrees Celsius is maintained by over five million sweat glands.
However sometimes they may go haywire.
They may overdo their job, causing the person to perspire too much, much more than the average.
The palms of the hands, the soles of feet, the face, the armpits and other parts of the body sweat, giving out unflattering odor and a slippery, wet feeling.
This is more embarrassing if we are meeting a person for the first time and cannot shake hands as the hands are clammy and wet.
Or if we are interviewing someone or appearing for an examination or test.
We feel embarrassed and shy.
Our dress stains, and our hands becomes wet, we cannot drive properly and have to continuously use a tissue, or we cannot cook properly, all because of excessive moisture.
This condition, which is quite a common one, it is called hyperhidrosis.
There are different names for different types of hyperhidrosis.
Profuse sweating of the face is called facial hyperhidrosis and excessive sweating in the armpits is called axillary hyperhidrosis.
The cause of this condition of our body parts is not known but the nervous system and the sweat glands can be held responsible for it.
Axillary hyperhidrosis can cause embarrassing wet marks on shirts and blouses.
One has to keep on changing the dress all the time which may not always be possible.
In such cases one looks very unkempt and society frowns upon them.
Also colored clothes may run and merge with other colors in the shirt or blouse causing embarrassment.
Though hyperhidrosis is not such a bad condition or disease, one cannot ignore it.
Many people do so and often it goes away as one grows up, especially in cases where adolescence is the reason for hyperhidrosis.
But if it is too excessive then medical intervention can help.
After studying the situation, the doctor may suggest surgery where the excess sweat glands are cut off, or the nerves are conditioned, thus solving the problem.
