What to Look For When Choosing a Dog Collar

22
When buying a dog collar for your dog, you want to be sure that you get the right kind.
There are many options to choose from and the best one depends on several factors.
One thing to consider when buying a dog collar is the size of your dog.
Smaller dogs can usually handle a much lighter and less sturdy collar, as the chances of them being able to pull on and break them are slim.
Larger dogs, however, typically need a strong collar that will effectively hold them back, especially if they are not quite well trained yet.
Another thing to consider when purchasing a dog collar is what you want to get out of the collar.
If you have an older dog that is already trained, you will likely want a simple collar either made out of a nylon type cloth or leather.
You'll probably want to get identification tags put on the collar for easy identification in case your dog is lost.
Be sure to also include their rabies vaccination information as well, in the case that animal has to become involved for some reason.
If they know your dog has been vaccinated they will not have to take drastic cautionary measures.
If you have a puppy or a dog that simply hasn't been trained yet, you will probably want a dog collar that is made specifically for training.
There are several types of collars that can be used for this purpose.
One option is a collar known as a choke collar.
This is a collar that is basically like a slip knot that is placed over your dogs head.
When they pull against their leash the collar will tighten up, causing pressure on their neck.
This will eventually train them from pulling hard on their collar.
Those types of dog collars have the potential to be dangerous if you leave your dog unattended, as they can get caught on objects and choke your dog.
If you are concerned this will happen, you can purchase a specialty kind of slip collar called a break away collar that will actually come apart if gets caught on something.
The great thing about a break away dog collar is that if it's attached to a lease it will not break away, so you don't have to worry about your dog getting loose while you are training him.
Another type of dog collar that can be used for training is a muzzle.
This type of collar is good for dogs that are aggressive and not yet socialized.
The muzzle will prevent their ability to bite people or other animals but will still allow them to breathe effectively.
They typically have a special strap on them as well that will pull against the dog when they pull on the leash.
Some people think these types of collars are dangerous or harmful to the dog.
However, studies have shown that if used correctly they do not harm or hurt a dog in any way.
