When most people think about Manchester, they may not immediately think of the theatre, but that doesn't mean this enigmatic city doesn't have a great deal to offer when it comes to the great stage.
With countless talented actors stepping on the stage to perform a wealth of plays and musicals, as well as nights of opera, dance and stand up comedy, Manchester has so much to offer that you could find yourself heading to this exhilarating city with nothing but the theatre in mind.
There are plenty of theatrical groups in Manchester that all work towards bringing you an incredible theatre experience.
From the height of skilled players and troupes to brand new amateur associations, there's always something on to suit everybody's tastes - and their price band.
Best of all, you won't have to worry about travelling to London again to catch the biggest West End performances - so many of these shows now travel the country, the chances are you'll be able to check them out in Manchester theatres instead of making the long trip to the south east of England.
Manchester's status in the theatre world has elevated so that West End troupes are always prepared to include it in their tours - which is something that's definitely worth taking advantage of.
So what are the main theatres of Manchester? Well, there's the Manchester Opera House, one of the favoured locations for West End travelling shows - alongside the Palace Theatre and the Royal Exchange Theatre.
These are some of the city's biggest theatres where you should head to if you're interested in checking out the UK's most talked about shows.
However, if you're into smaller productions that may be a little more off the beaten track, you should head to the Liberty Theatre - which is located in the basement of Manchester's Central Library - the Green Room or Studio Salford.
All of these offer smaller productions and provide some amateur companies with the chance to show off their stuff on pleasant stages in welcoming theatres.
Once you've taken in your theatre experience, you may want to check out some of the city's fantastic bars, restaurants or even one of its myriad clubs before heading back to whichever of the numerous hotels in Manchester youare staying in for a good night's sleep - and where undoubtedly your dreams will be filled with music, dance and drama - or whatever you took in on the stage at one of Manchester's wonderful theatres.
