State Assembly Bill Passed to Seek Religious Protection in the Workplace
Since the 9/11 attacks and the recent Boston Marathon Bombings, some people came up with generalizations that a certain religion, in this case Islam, is a very violent one when in reality, it is not.
Religious discrimination is one of the biggest problems that many people, including employees are facing.
Over the years, the stigma resulting from generalizations on religion has caused alienation from unpopular religious groups.
It is alarming that people fail to see beyond these wrong stereotypes and the innate goodness of everyone.
Recent moves to fight religious discrimination in the workplace The California State Assembly has passed a bill in its aim to minimize, if not completely end employment discrimination based on religion.
This will soon be the subject of a Senate vote.
By coming up with clear distinctions regarding the issue of religious grab, this new bill seeks to strike through the ambiguity of religious protection in the workplace.
According to recent studies, discrimination based on one's religion in the workplace has been steadily increasing.
These findings show the need for reforms in the current legislation so that a more precise approach against religious discrimination can be achieved.
Rising up to the challenge Assemblywoman Mariko Yamada, one of the proponents of the bill, believes that a bill that will mandate protection of religious clothing in the workplace is a necessary amendment to the current Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA).
Various civil groups have shown their great support along with the Sikh Coalition, the Hindu American Foundation, as well as the Council on American Islamic Relations.
With this new bill, grey areas in the currently implemented law will be stricken out.
If passed, people wearing turbans, hijabs, kirpans, and other religiously mandated hairstyles will be given protection from discrimination.
Also, no employer will be allowed to segregate an employee from a customer if the worker happens to wear such articles of clothing.
Call for support Now that the bill has been passed to the Senate, support for this new bill is important in making sure that this new will be signed and implemented the sooner.
One of the ways to do that is by signing up in an online petition site.
A group of those in favor of this new bill have put up an online petition that aims to push for the passing of this bill.
As a regular citizen, you can also encourage the Senate to finally pass the bill.
Should this new legislation be passed, a victim of religious discrimination can hire a lawyer to help represent you in court and win your complaint.
This way, no more discrimination based on one's religion can ever happen again and people can live without the fear of being judged while they exercise their religious beliefs.
