DIY Wood Pellet Furnace
- The main body of the stove is built out of an old electric water heater tank. Use a cutting torch or a similar tool to cut off the old legs at the bottom of the tank, any old piping sticking out of the tank, and the old controls. Also utilize the torch to cut one end off the tank and clean out any insulation or otherwise ignitable materials inside of the tank body itself. The edges of the tank should be quite thick and will provide adequate insulation against the outside air when the furnace is lit.
- Either have a firebox door welded on by a local welding shop, or do it yourself if you have the proper equipment and knowledge. Make sure the seams are sealed properly and that you get the chimney and ductwork connections installed on the right side. Weld or screw legs onto the bottom of the tank and make sure all of the inside and outside are painted with heat-resistant engine paint.
- Connect the ductwork to the duct connection on the outside of the stove, making sure to position it a safe distance from the home. To utilize the stove, simply fill it with pellets and light them. Close the hatch and allow the pellets to burn and smolder, heating the air inside the stove, which is then passed along the ductwork and into the home. The stove will need to be refilled and possibly relit each morning during the winter to ensure that the home stays warm and toasty.
