How to Install Molding Around an Attic Stair's Entrance
- 1). Measure the perimeter of the stair opening with a measuring tape. Write down the measurements on a piece of paper.
- 2). Paint or stain the molding as desired. Most homeowners paint the molding to match the surrounding ceiling. You can also paint or stain the molding in a contrasting color to make it stand out.
- 3). Measure out and then mark the appropriate measurements on the length of molding with a pencil. Indicate on the molding the desired direction of the 45-degree-angle cut. Each corner on the molding should be made up of two opposite 45-degree angles.
- 4). Place the molding flat on the miter saw. Adjust the molding until it lines up to where it should be cut. Adjust the miter saw to the correct 45-degree angle for the cut. Cut the molding to size.
- 5). Hold the molding on the ceiling and nail it in place with a pneumatic nail gun. Fill the nail holes with putty and let it dry. Touch up the paint as needed.
