    State Grants for BCC Students

    • Brevard Community College students are eligible for the Florida Student Assistance Grant if they meet the qualifications. The Florida Office of State Financial Assistance oversees the grants, which are only available to students who have been Florida residents for at least one year. Students also must be enrolled in AA or AS degree programs. The Office of State Financial Assistance gives priority to students who also are eligible to receive the federal Pell Grant. The awards range from $200 to $1,916 per year, based on the figures for the 2010-11 school year.

    Federal Grants for BCC Students

    • Students at Brevard Community College are eligible for federal student grants. These federally-funded grants include the Federal Pell Grant, the Academic Competitiveness Grant and the Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant. The ACG program is a grant that students at BCC can use during their first two years of college. Students must meet criteria for participation in the ACG program. These criteria include completing rigorous high school coursework. Students who wish to receive a grant for a second year also must maintain a 3.0 GPA during their first year and must complete at least 24 credit hours during the first year. The first-year ACG award is $750. The second-year award is $1,300.

The Pell Grant awards students funds to be used toward tuition and books. It is the largest of the three federal grant programs available to students at Brevard Community College. Full-time students receive up to $600 per semester for books. The Federal Educational Opportunity Grant is a supplemental program that provides additional funding for certain students who already receive the Pell Grant. The awards are based on financial need, and only students with exceptional need qualify for these awards, which provide students with an extra $200 to $650 in financial aid.

    Scholarships

    • While they are technically not grants, scholarships are similar to grants, and Brevard Community College students can use dozens of scholarships to fund their educations. Institutional scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence. These scholarships are awarded by individual departments at BCC and provide partial to full tuition coverage. The art, drama, music and dance departments are among those offering institutional scholarships.

The BCC High School Academic Scholarship is awarded only to students who were among the top 10 in their high school's senior class, and the scholarships are limited to students who attend schools in Brevard County. Florida Bright Futures Scholarships provide financial awards to students who participate in the Bright Futures programs through high school. The scholarships provide financial aid awards for up to seven years after graduation. The Brevard Community College Foundation also awards scholarships. Students must apply for foundation scholarships. Each year, the nonprofit BCC Foundation awards thousands of dollars' worth of scholarships.

Jose Marti Scholarship Challenge Grant Fund

    • This state-supported grant provides financial aid to students of Hispanic origin. It is a need-based scholarship program. Students who attend either Florida public institutions or eligible private institutions qualify to receive the grants. Graduate students can apply for the grants, but preference is given to college-bound high school seniors. Students must be Florida residents. Students also must have a 3.0 GPA to qualify. The award amount for 2010-'11 was $2,000.
