Immigration Policy Future in the United Kingdom

12
Immigration in the United Kingdom is constantly under review as more and more people flock to the country to find work and start a new life. There are so many changes taking place and the government has already stated that they want to reduce the net number of migrants in the coming years.

While immigration may be taxing on health care and benefits in the country, they are also providing positivity on the economy. Many of the people moving to the United Kingdom bring their own unique skill sets in the public and private sectors.

Unfortunately the objectives of the immigration policy don't take the benefits into consideration, only focusing on the negatives. Immigration and the concerns surrounding it are constantly in the news and remains a top concern for the UK electorate with beliefs that there is no benefit to what migrants have to offer the country.

A large majority of the concerns come from the public and are not focused on the evidence in front of them on how immigration can benefit the UK economy moving forward. It is important that even when we have concerns and reservations about immigration into the United Kingdom, we should also be looking at whether the concerns we have are legitimate. The concerns should be justified based on the evidence and not a result of the fact that they exist.

Concerns could easily be eased throughout the country through education and investing in policies to promote cohesion. This could be more beneficial to the country that cutting immigration as an effort to satisfy the public and the press.

Other concerns regarding the future immigration policy includes the policies English language requirements for spouses, which is going to have a negative effect on applicants from certain countries. Putting this in place can limit the labour market in the country.

It is important to understand that the immigration policy has been put in place to ensure that rules are followed when moving to the United Kingdom, this is completely acceptable. The terms and some of the new policies included are making it harder for certain people to move to the country, separating families for months and years at a time, in some cases making it impossible for spouses and children to join the migrant in the United Kingdom.

One of the major concerns is illegal immigration, which was included in the immigration bill which received royal assent on 14 May 2014. This bill made some changes to improve how the home office deals with illegals in the hope of deterring people to stay in the country illegally.

The bill focuses on changes regarding removal and appeal systems and also preventing illegal immigrants from accessing public services and the labour market. It also gives private landlords the ability to identify nationality before signing a lease with a potential tenant.

With the new bill in place, net migration has already reduced significantly with the government hoping this will make the country a great place to live and work. At the same time, while net migration takes a knock, the economy may suffer moving forward as we don't have access to those unique skill sets that were being brought in by migrants.

Up to now it has been very easy for people living and working in the United Kingdom illegally. While they have been here, the majority of them have paid national insurance and taxes and have been an integral part of society and our economy as a whole.

The future of immigration in the United Kingdom is unknown and this could be a serious impact on our economy moving forward.
