Scientists have spent a lot of time researching different perfumes for women and men, and observing the effects the scent of the wearer has on other people. Apparently, humans can smell fear, excitement, even arousal! Scent is a powerful thing, and our naturally produced smells mean mothers can recognise their children purely by smell, while young children use their sense of smell to recognise each other before they can talk.

Businesses also understand the power of perfume, and they use it to make their product more enticing. For example, a butcher might use the smell of fresh sausages on a barbeque to lure you in; if you're shopping for baby clothes, you might notice the smell of baby powder; car companies will scent their cars with a chemically engineered ‘new car smell'; and if you're in a swimwear store, you might notice tropical smells like coconut. These smells all help us imagine a certain activity or lifestyle that these products will supposedly allow us to fulfill.

So who came up with the idea to bottle our favourite smells and spray or dab them onto ourselves? Perfume existed in some of the earliest human civilisations and, as with many things, perfume is thought to have originated with the Egyptians. Their perfumes were simple and were later refined by the Romans and Arabs.

Even back then, it seems they knew the power that a great scent could have, especially when trying to attract a partner. Modern perfume manufacturers use this heavily in their marketing campaigns – for example, Lynx created the concept of ‘The Lynx Effect', which refers to how attractive and irresistible men supposedly become when wearing Lynx. Now it's easy for anyone to buy perfume online and find their perfect scent, be it discount perfume or Giorgio Armani fragrances.

Perfume manufactures (especially the big ones, like the aforementioned Armani perfume) keep their formulations a secret, instead referring to the ‘notes' of the fragrance to help customers select a product at perfume shops. Women's and men's perfumes have three notes: top notes, middle notes and base notes. This scale describes the overall experience of a fragrance, from the moment it is applied until it begins to wear off. Cheap perfume tends to have less complex notes and doesn't last as long as a high quality or designer fragrance.

 Fragrances are then usually described by using names like Floral, Amber, Oriental, Woody, Aquatic, Citrus or Fruity, allowing customers to pick the fragrance that best suits their style. Whether it's the latest designer fragrance or a new celebrity perfume, we all want to smell good!
