Duties & Responsibilities of U.S. Citizens

17

    Support and Protect the Law

    • All United States citizens must abide the law. Laws are enacted by the government through the civic participation of elected citizens. These citizens are voted into office by the general public. Laws are reflections of the will of the people and a U.S. citizen must support and protect this process even if it differs from his personal opinion.

    Civic Participation

    • An American citizen has the duty to be active in the civic processes of the government through voting, running for office or being active in the community. This includes the right to peacefully organize in protest against the actions of the government. For the U.S. government to function properly it requires all citizens to use their civic voice. Some civic participation is compulsory such as jury duty and registering for the draft.

    Taxes

    • It is the responsibility of all United States citizens to pay taxes. The money is used by the elected officials of the democratic government to protect and enhance the United States. The money goes towards school, roads and national defense. The government is not a business, it is run for the people and by the people, with a citizen's tax money.

    Tolerance

    • The United States becomes stronger when the people respect differences of opinions and realize that their personal political beliefs will not always be represented by their elected officials. Respecting differences of opinion means supporting and protecting the rights of others, including the rights to free speech and religion. A U.S. citizen has the responsibility to realize there are many disparate voices in a democracy.
