Fencing in a Sports Dog

25
An underground dog fence for a large area is best suited for dogs that like to hunt, run and need lots of room and lots of exercise every day.
If you have space and want to allow your hunter, retriever or large dog lots of room to roam without the fear of him going too far, then a sports dog fencing system is right for you.
An underground electric dog fence made for Labradors and hound dogs, sheppards and Pyrenees is perfect because it allows flexibility and distance for the run.
This is an underground electric fence system which provides a boundary that allows the dog lots of room to move while giving you a sense of security for your dog's safety.
The system consists of a wire fence which can be placed underground, tied to an existing fence or secured by staples to the ground.
In addition, it includes a receiver collar for the dog or dogs to wear and a transmitter that conducts the current to the collar.
This is a harmless shock that corrects or diverts the dog's attention.
Extra wire will increase the capacity up to 100 acres.
Extra collars allow usage by several dogs.
Training is imperative for this or any electric dog fence system.
Let me repeat that! Training is not only effective but imperative.
The dog must learn by his pack leader (you) that going outside the boundary is bad.
When properly trained, dogs accept their limitations and rarely ignore the correction.
Any time there is a breach of the boundary, immediate correction is suggested like putting the dog on a leach until retraining of the boundary can be scheduled.
Depending on your dog 2-3 weeks is a usual training period.
Once a dog learns that the correction stops after a period of time when the dog has broken through the boundary and the dog is allowed to continue the bad behavior, it is much harder to retrain or correct the bad behavior.
Some dogs like black labs, German Sheppards, Alaskan Malamutes and other breeds have a capacity to run through the border without flinching at a low level correction.
They are not necessarily being bad as much as they have a high pain tolerance and don't feel the stimulation.
So, I will say it again! Training is imperative for these dogs.
All of the underground dog fences only correct the dog for a certain width on either side of the in-ground wire.
They absolutely must learn to obey the signal you give them through the collar.
Training is what teaches the dog that paying attention to the signal is what you want from the dog.
Teach your dog that the signal comes from you, his pack leader, and that you expect obedience to the correction and that retreat is the only way to stop the correction.
After all, if you do have a large area for the dog to run it could take a while for you to learn that the boundary has been breached.
And we don't want our favorite pet to be hurt from being outside the safe zone!
