How to Plant Frozen Acorns
- 1). Fill the bottom of a 1-gallon sealable plastic bag with 4 cups of horticultural grit. Drizzle 4 tbsp. of water over the grit to moisten it. Place the frozen acorns on the moistened grit. Press them into it until they are completely covered.
- 2). Seal the bag and place it in the freezer or crisper drawer of the refrigerator. Chill the acorns for 48 hours at 34 degrees Fahrenheit.
- 3). Prepare planting containers once the acorns have completed cold stratification. For each acorn, fill a 1-gallon nursery container with a mix of equal parts horticultural grit and regular garden soil.
- 4). Sow the acorns 2 inches deep in individual planting containers. Lay the acorns horizontally when sowing them. Make sure the acorns are completely covered in the grit and soil mixture. Water each container to a depth of 3 inches.
- 5). Place the containers outdoors in a sheltered spot with good air circulation and dappled shade. Water the acorns to a depth of 1 inch every 10 days if there is no measurable precipitation. Look for signs of growth in 60 days.
- 6). Plant the oak seedlings in a permanent bed once they reach 6 inches in height and have produced several sets of mature foliage. Choose a sunny planting site with draining soil. Mulch around the baby oaks with a 1-inch-thick layer of oak mulch after planting.
