Ursodiol in Dogs
- Bile is a secretion that prepares fats for further digestion, and, as a result, it is extremely important in the general digestive process. Ursodiol is a bile acid that improves the flow of bile through the digestive system, including common buildup points such as the tiny ducts into the gallbladder. Ursodiol decreases the amount of cholesterol in bile and the amount of cholesterol the liver produces. Ursodiol can also increase the breakdown of cholesterol that has formed into gallstones.
- Ursodiol has numerous digestive benefits. Over time, the medication is capable of dissolving certain types of gallbladder stones. It removes toxic bile acids by improving the flow of "good" bile acids. Ursodiol can also help treat cirrhosis (a chronic liver disease) and chronic active hepatitis (inflammation of the liver). Finally, ursodiol is extremely safe, with few side effects.
- Ursodiol is known as a safe drug. However, every animal will react differently, and, as with all drugs, side effects are possible. If your dog has a history of cholecystitis (inflamed gallbladder) or has been treated for calcified gallstones, do not administer the drug. Also, be careful when giving ursodiol to dogs with a history of pancreatitis, biliary obstruction or cholangitis. Double-check with your veterinarian if you are using ursodiol in combination with any other drug. The most common side effect of ursodiol is diarrhea. Intense diarrhea may be a sign of overdose.
- Ursodiol comes in capsule form and should be given in the exact amount prescribed by your veterinarian. The medication should be taken with food, and your dog should drink plenty of water while taking ursodiol. Ursodiol should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
- Ursodiol capsules are very large and can be inconvenient for smaller dogs. In this case, a compounding pharmacy can be used to create a smaller, more easily swallowed medication.
Ursodiol should only be administered to the animal for which it is prescribed. It should never be given to rabbits, guinea pigs and other small animals, as it can cause death.
